Amir and Baba left Kabul after Hassan and Ali left the house that they have always been living in together, as one family. Amir was now eighteen years old, many years had passed. Baba was embarrassed of what Amir had did, not helping Hassan when he was getting raped by Assef. They sat in the car ride to Kabul with a husband and wife. During the drive, Amir continuously complained about feeling sick, but Baba did not care. He just turned away from him. Amir wanted to tell him sorry for the troubles he caused, but vomited before he was able to. They stopped near a high summit area that overlooked the hydro plants the Germans built for Afghanistan. He stood at the edge of the cliff, thinking. Amir was thinking about the way they left the house, the place he lived his whole life. It was as if they were just going out to eat. Dishes were not cleaned, laundry was left in the wicker basket, beds unmade, and Baba's suits hanging in the closet. Everything they owned was gone, as if it was not important to them. But everything was, each thing had memories.
Later during the drive to Kabul, they stopped to see Russian soldiers. The Russian raised his gun towards Baba, Amir begged him to sit down. But he would not listen. The soldier overheard what Baba said to Amir about him. He talked bad about the Russian's father. The soldier had a grin on his face and pointed the gun at Bada's chest. Amir's heart was pounding and he covered his face with his hands. Amir was thinking of what could happen. He would be eighteen and alone. That he would have no one left in the world. But he opened his eyes to see that Baba was still standing. Alive.
Karim, the driver, took them into a one-story house. They dragged all their belongings into the house where they were going to stay. Then Karim gave them bad news. His brother was not able to take them to Peshawar. The engine of the truck had blown the week before Karim began driving them. They all wanted to know why he did not tell him. All of them were filled with anger, especially Baba. Baba grabbed Karim's neck and began to choke him, until his face was a unusual color. He let him go after he heard thumps next door. Karim said it was the others. They have been waiting to go to Kabul also, for almost two weeks. Them and the others were all in hiding. When Amir adjusted his eyes to the dark, he saw a familiar face. It was Kamal and his father. They too had left because a stray bullet hit his wife in the temple and killed her. The basement that they were staying in was hard to breathe in. Kamal started to choke, he could no longer breathe. When Baba and Amir got to them, they saw Kamal's dead body laying on his fathers lap.His was father screaming hysterically. Baba tried to comfort him, but Kamal's father pushed him away. Then Kamal's father took Kamil's gun and shoved it in his mouth. Everyone begged him not to shoot, but he did.
Amir and Baba arrived at Fremont, California. It was now the 1980's. Baba loved the idea of America. Living in America was a pain. Everything was different. They were treated differently then how they were treated in Afghanistan. People had not trust in America. Always doubted people. For Amir, everything was good. Baba got him a new car and he decided to go to college to major in English.
