The Kite Runner Pg. 1-40

The story is being told by Amir, and he his talking about his childhood with his friend Hassan. They are both very close because they were practically raised together. Amir's mom died while giving birth to him. A week after Hassan was born, his mother, Sanaubar, ran off with traveling singers and dancers. But he never talked about her. They were always teased about what had happened to their moms. One day Hassan and Amir were walking home, and a group of soldiers started talking bad about his mother, and one soldier said that he knew her real good. Amir kept reassuring him that they mistaken him for someone else. Both Hassan and Amir would do things they were not supposed to. Every time they got caught by Ali, Hassan's dad, Hassan would take the blame for Amir. Even though the pranks were always Amir's ideas. Amir's dad never payed any attention to him, but always to Hassan. Amir's dad is always in his study with his friend smoking a pipe and drinking. When Amir tried to talk to him, he did not care for his talk. Amir's baba (dad in Arabic), always says that Amir came out differently. Saying that if he did not see Amir being born from his wife that he would have never guessed that was his son. But for Hassan, it was different. Ali always cared for Hassan. But Hassan had to take care of his father because Ali had polio. When he got polio it caused congenital paralysis of his lower facial muscles, and that caused him not to be able to smile, which left him grim-faced. People always said that eyes are windows to the souls. That was the only way Ali could show his emotions. Kids were constantly making fun of Ali as he walked in the streets. They would call him Babalu (boogeyman), saying "Who did you eat, you flat-nosed Babalu?" He would just ignore them and continue on.

more to come :)
